NEW JERSEY E -BIKE LAW 2026

New Jersey’s sweeping e -bike law requires all electric bikes (classified as motorized bicycles) to be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Full enforcement is in effect, and riders failing to comply face fines up to $50 and risk impoundment. The new rules mandate:

Licensing: Riders must be at least 15 years old and hold a valid driver ’s license or a specific e -bike license from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

Registration & Insurance: All e -bikes must be registered. Faster, throttle -propelled e -bikes also require liability insurance.

(Registration fees are waived for the first year). Helmets: Helmets are mandatory for all riders, regardless of age.
